Vitamin D3, also known as calcitriol, is the active form of vitamin D, and has the ability to regulate gene expression in the nucleus of a cell, playing a crucial role in orchestrating the body’s natural biochemistry by regulating hormones and their secretion. Vitamin D3 also assists with the absorption of calcium. When taken with vitamin K2, they form a powerful bone-building combo as they are able to direct calcium to the bone matrix and greatly assist with the development and maintenance of bone density.
Deficiency in vitamin D has been associated with reduced calcium absorption, which may lead to osteoporosis and an increase in fracture risk. It has also been linked to a reduction in muscle strength, and may increase the chance of some cancers and rheumatoid arthritis. Vitamin D has a substantial impact on mental health, ranging from concentration and sleep quality to mood disorders, such as depression, anxiety and seasonal affective disorder (SAD), often experienced by those living in less sunny climates – the ‘sunshine vitamin’ really does help with those ‘winter blues’.
Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, meaning that the body stores the vitamin and does not ‘flush it out’ as regularly as water soluble vitamins. Some foods that contain vitamin D include salmon, tuna and mackerel as well as liver, cheese and egg yolks. Insufficient sun exposure and a lack of vitamin D rich foods in one’s diet has led to many of us being deficient in this vital vitamin. We always recommend that one has their vitamin D levels tested before implementing the use of additional supplementation.
