B vitamins are water-soluble vitamins that play an essential role in the optimal functioning of the human body. Because our bodies are unable to produce B vitamins on their own, we need to obtain them through our diet or supplementation. 

Thiamine, also known as Vitamin B1, plays an important role in the metabolising of food, which is then converted into energy for the body. It is essential for the prevention of Wernicke-Korsakoff and Beri-Beri disease, both of which are caused by vitamin B1 deficiency,  and affect the brain, heart, and digestive and nervous systems. Excessive consumption of alcohol has shown to be linked to a lack of vitamin B1.

Niacin (Vitamin B3) plays an important role in the functioning of the metabolism. Without it, our bodies are unable to break down food into energy. A lack of vitamin B3 can lead to the disorder known as pellagra, which affects the body both mentally and physically in that it can result in cases of dementia, dermatitis and diarrhoea.

The word ‘biotin’ originates from the Greek word ‘biotos’ which means ‘life’ and / or ‘sustenance’. Beyond skin, hair and nail health, biotin helps keep your eyes, liver and nervous system healthy too. During pregnancy, biotin is especially critical for embryonic growth. 

Folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, is most prominent in dark leafy greens. It is particularly important for its ability to support cell division and promotes healthy development of fetal growth while reducing the risk of birth defects. Most people associate folic acid with pregnant women, however this nutrient is important for both sexes as it assists with heart and hair health too. There has also been research that suggests that sufficient folic acid may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease.
