Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, making up roughly a third of all protein. We commonly hear of type 1 & type 3 collagen, but what is type 2 collagen and why is it different?
Type 2 collagen is most commonly taken from cartilage matter as opposed to type 1 & 3 collagen, which is generally derived from the hide or skin of animals. Our chicken collagen is rich in type 2 collagen, and is derived from the cartilage of chicken breast / sternum. While all collagen is anti-inflammatory, chicken collagen is especially so and is good for fighting bone and joint-related pain and degeneration, as it naturally contains high levels of chondroitin and glucosamine. These two compounds help to rebuild cartilage and promote hyaluronic acid synthesis, which is found in the synovial fluid (joint fluid) where it is responsible for drawing in more water to assist the joints with lubrication and physical impact absorption. Type 2 collagen is also rich in arginine, glutamine, glycine and proline, which each come with their own benefits ranging from improved blood circulation and immunity, to optimal gut and digestive function.
For inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, type 2 collagen is particularly beneficial. In Osteo-arthritis, the wear and tear over time causes destruction of the cartilage, while in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) it is the chronic inflammation and immune response of the autoimmune disease that results in progressive joint degradation, deformity and possibly loss of function. Type 2 collagen assists by helping rebuild cartilage while reducing inflammation, but it has also been shown to have the ability to induce oral tolerance. What this means is that it is able to diminish the immune response to antigens, which in turn inhibits the further development of the RA – it helps to ‘retrain’ the body to not attack itself. Beyond RA, this amazing property can be shown to be beneficial for other autoimmune conditions too.
Type 2 collagen is also a great option for athletes. Because of its ability to reduce inflammation, support joint health and mobility, as well as promote muscle growth and maintenance, type 2 collagen enhances athletic performance while speeds up post exercise recovery time.
