Research consistently shows that Akkermansia levels tend to be lower in people living with obesity, type 2 diabetes and with advancing age. Human clinical studies on pasteurised Akkermansia muciniphila have shown improvements in markers of metabolic health in overweight and insulin-resistant adults, compared with placebo. In a placebo-controlled human study, individuals taking pasteurised Akkermansia showed lower post-meal blood glucose levels. The total glucose response after a meal (measured as glucose area under the curve (AUC) over 180 minutes) was reduced by approximately 36.1 mg/dL, and incremental glucose AUC was reduced by about 28.6 mg/dL, compared with placebo. A small but meaningful improvement in long-term blood sugar control was also observed, with HbA1c decreasing by around 0.6% versus placebo.

Additional research suggests that Akkermansia may help support the gut lining and reduce low-grade inflammation. It has also been shown to interact with gut-derived hormones such as GLP-1, which play a role in appetite signalling, glucose metabolism, and overall metabolic regulation.
