The truth about collagen in skin products
Our skin is made of 3 layers – the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin that serves as a protective layer to lock in moisture and nutrients, while keeping out harmful pollutants. It also provides protection against the sun and its UV rays. The dermis is the middle layer where you will find nerves, proteins, glands, enzymes and blood vessels. Finally we have the hypodermis, also referred to as the subcutaneous tissue. This is the base layer of our skin where you will find fat cells, nerves and blood vessels.
When we’re young, our skin is naturally plump, hydrated, and has a noticeable ‘youthful glow’ as we so often hear. Our skin is made up of collagen, hyaluronic acid, elastin, moisture, and many other intricate elements. As we age, our natural collagen stores decline, collagen and hyaluronic acid production decreases, and elastin starts to break down, resulting in a less supported dermis, with saggy skin and less hydration. In the epidermis layer, lines and wrinkles start to develop, and skin hyperpigmentation may occur due to this natural ageing process, as well phyto damage caused by UV ray exposure.
We all know the wonderful benefits of supplementing with Pure Hydrolysed Collagen and Vitamin C, so why would we need a topical option too? The benefits of collagen may take time to physically manifest as our body first directs the collagen to areas that need it most, which in many cases is our joints, muscles, and digestive system, leaving us waiting for it to take effect on our skin, especially as we fight the effects of sun damage, stress, and general ageing. By applying collagen topically, we are able to quickly and safely provide intense hydration and moisture to our outer epidermis layer. A topical Vitamin C application allows for direct absorption by the skin, resulting in quicker, more visible benefits.
We consulted with many skincare experts and industry manufacturers on our quest to formulate the perfect skincare range. We wanted to develop a range that not only provides lasting results, but also supports our ethos of only using the purest and cleanest of ingredients. We insisted on alcohol-, paraben- and fragrance-free formulations. This is why we deliberately decided to exclude a sun protection factor from the moisturiser, we will leave that up to you to decide how you wish to protect your skin from the sun. Where applicable, we included essential oils for their incredible scent and effective medicinal properties.
Each product in this range has been specially formulated to provide amazing results, and to work in conjunction with one another. From the specific active ingredients to the overall formulations, we developed a range specifically designed to provide your skin with intense moisture, while increasing collagen production and skin cell turnover. Collagen Moisturiser
Our Sally-Ann Creed® Collagen Moisturiser is a multi-action day-and-night cream that is an ultra hydrating formulation shown to diminish the signs of even the deepest wrinkles. This moisturiser has been specifically formulated to nourish the outermost layer of the skin – by using the amazing moisture retention properties of Sally-Ann Creed® Pure Hydrolysed Collagen – while improving long term skin health and appearance due to improved moisture stores and hyaluronic acid levels. The added benefit from the aromatherapy properties of neroli makes this moisturiser not only intensely hydrating, but also skin soothing due to its natural anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties.
Daily Cleanser
Our Sally-Ann Creed® Daily Cleanser has been formulated to not only remove make-up and impurities, but also to restore the skin, leaving it smoother and more hydrated. All too often cleansers either fail to remove all your makeup, or they leave you with that tight, post cleanse feel prompting you to reach for your moisturiser asap! We made it our quest to develop a formulation that can leave you with a clean, radiant complexion while having a smooth, soft skin feel. We have included niacinamide, glycerine and squalane. Each of these ingredients provide amazing anti-ageing benefits, and together make for a triple threat age-defying, skin cleansing product we know you will love as much as we do.

Our skincare range contains specific active ingredients to transform your skin. Many of these ingredients can react when exposed to oxygen, meaning that they lose some of their beneficial properties while reducing the product’s lifespan. For this reason we searched high and low for packaging that was user friendly, while able to protect the contents from damage. Our airless pumps allow the serum to remain in an airtight environment, preventing any oxidative stress to the inner ingredients. We hope you enjoy their seamless look and feel, while having the additional peace of mind knowing that the product within is kept at its full effectiveness.
Collagen Serum
Our Collagen Serum contains Hyaluronic Acid and Pure Hydrolysed Collagen, and provides instant skin radiance and rejuvenation, as well as long term restorative effects. It’s dual action formulation results in less wrinkles and fine lines on the skin’s surface, plumping and hydrating the outermost layer, while increasing the moisture stores of the lower layers of the skin. We added rosehip oil for its naturally high Vitamin C content, which further stimulates collagen production within the skin while providing anti-ageing properties and essential fatty acids known to support the skin and the skin barrier.
Retinol Serum
Our Retinol Serum’s 0.5% concentration is a high potency Vitamin A that improves skin appearance as well as skin cell health thanks to its amazing ability to improve skin cell turnover along with increasing collagen production. As we age, our skin’s collagen stores break down, resulting in a saggier, more wrinkled appearance. Retinol prevents collagen breakdown while improving both the frequency and quality of collagen production. Retinol also unclogs pores, inhibits the overproduction of sebum, and reduces the appearance of dark spots. Incorporating this serum, in conjunction with a Vitamin C serum, is a winning duo resulting in a radiant, age defying complexion!
Vitamin C Serum
Our Vitamin C Serum is a high-potency serum containing Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), Vitamin E and IntenCfy (ergothioneine & mannitol). Together these active ingredients make for a powerhouse antioxidant formulation that the skin loves! This serum provides amazing phyto-protection which protects skin cells from the detrimental long-term effects of the sun’s UV radiation. Turmeric provides this serum with further antioxidant properties as well as soothing anti-inflammatory properties. Incorporating this serum into your routine will result in a firmer, brighter more radiant complexion.

When we developed our skincare range, we decided not to include a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) into our Collagen Moisturiser as we wanted it to be both a day and night moisturiser, which can then be supplemented with your favourite SPF of choice. Whether you prefer a mineral based sunscreen or a chemical sunscreen, it is always important to apply daily. Opting for an SPF of 30+ is highly recommended, and should be applied after moisturising, but before applying any makeup.
To amplify your skin’s overall sun protection, we recommend that you incorporate an antioxidant-rich serum, such as our Vitamin C Serum, into your skincare regime as this helps prevent and reverse long term skin damage and discolouration caused by harmful UV rays.
Chemical fragrances can often cause skin reactions for those with even not-so-sensitive skin. We therefore opted to incorporate essential oils, which are able to provide the skin with further enrichment, while stimulating the senses in a natural way.
Our collagen moisturiser has the subtle hint of Neroli, also known as Orange Blossom extract. We chose this essential oil due to its incredible antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiseptic properties – meaning it calms and soothes not only the skin, but the mind as well, with its wonderfully floral and slight citrus scent.
Our Collagen Serum contains Rosehip Oil. This oil is another incredible antioxidant that is able to soothe and soften the skin while protecting the cells from both UVA and UVB damage. With its subtle woody and somewhat earthy aroma, this serum is grounding and ultra hydrating.
Lastly, we have used Turmeric Extract in our Vitamin C Serum. Although this does not provide much fragrance, it does give the serum a subtle yellow aesthetic. Turmeric is incredibly anti-inflammatory and, when combined with our antioxidant rich Vitamin C Serum, provides the skin with an incredible glow – don’t worry the turmeric will not cause any skin discolouration – quite the opposite in fact as it helps even out your skin tone thanks to the amazing antioxidants present.
When developing this range, we wanted to stay true to our ethos of, ‘as clean and pure as possible’. As we all know, skincare products are filled with all sorts of hard to pronounce ingredients. We opted for sustainably sourced toxin- and paraben-free ingredients, and only used the absolute necessary components. Locally manufactured right here in Cape Town, we worked closely with industry experts to deliver top quality products that are safe and effective for most skin types. We also insisted that the products are alcohol-free to reduce any skin irritation and no animal testing was done while during the development of these products.
Parabens are a type of preservative commonly used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. Chemically, they are a series of parahydroxybenzoates or esters of parahydroxybenzoic acid. They are found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, personal lubricants, topical/parenteral pharmaceuticals, suntan products, makeup, and toothpaste. They are also used as food preservatives. We prefer to not have them in our products, as they are harmful to the environment – especially when they are released into the environment after washing.

Across our new Grace skincare range you will notice a recurring design. This design is on each of the skincare products cartons, it’s on the sample range purses and even a signature feature on the box band and tissue paper that you receive your wonderful skincare range in. But what exactly is the significance?
Designed by a Cape Town based Stellenbosch student, this design was hand drawn and inspired by the ingredients incorporated into our range. The floral designs are of the Neroli and Rosehip Oil seeds, bulbs and flowers. These wonderful plants are not only beautiful but possess natural medicinal properties, which is why they have been specifically incorporated into our range. We hope you also enjoy their wonderful essential aroma too, providing your skin and your mind with a soothing and calming feel.
