Collagen is the body’s most abundant protein and accounts for up to a third of the protein found within the human body. Its role is vital in our overall health as it can be found in our bones, ligaments, tendons, connective tissue, blood vessels, skin, hair and nails. The word ‘collagen’ originates form the Greek word ‘kolla’, which means glue. Collagen is like the glue that holds everything together, and provides our body with its flexibility, strength and structure.
Collagen is comprised of a series of amino acids, giving it a unique amino acid profile that is known for having high levels of glycine, proline, hydroxyproline and alanine. Amino acids are the building blocks for proteins, and are essential for producing hormones and moving chemical messages through the body, all of which help our body’s connective tissue, skin, hair, and nails to stay as healthy as possible.
Our body produces collagen naturally and it is in abundance when we are younger, but unfortunately this natural production starts to decline from the age of 25, and continues to decline further as we age – during menopause, a woman’s collagen synthesis is drastically reduced even further. Additionally, exposure to ultraviolet light, exercise, smoking and pollution, excessive intake of sugar, genetics and stress can hasten the depletion of collagen in the body even further.
This loss of collagen can cause the skin to lose elasticity resulting in premature aging, skin sagging and deep-set wrinkles. Hair starts thinning and loses its natural colour. Additionally, the loss can cause joint cartilage to weaken, increasing one’s vulnerability for joint inflammation, pain, stiffness and the likelihood for injury, as joints aren’t as flexible and bones lose their density.
Supplementing with collagen is an easy and effective way to counter this natural loss of collagen, and prevent many health conditions.
Some further benefits from supplementing with collagen may include:
Who should be taking it?
Anyone can take collagen. We usually recommend that one starts in their mid to late twenties, as younger than this, one’s natural collagen production is still at its optimum.
How to take it?
Our collagen is easily digested, is highly soluble and extremely versatile. It can be used in just about anything from a hot cup of coffee, to an ice-cold smoothie or even your overnight oats.
All you need is 1-2 scoops / TBSP / sachets of our collagen added to your daily routine to reap the amazing benefits.
We usually recommend Type I and III (bovine) collagen not be taken together with Type II (chicken) collagen as they tend to compete for absorption in the gut, and this could hinder optimal absorption of either products, therefore they should be taken at different times of the day.
