Pelargonium is one of the most effective of all herbal medicines for colds, sore throat, sinusitis and acute bronchitis, and it’s extracted from a South African plant, Pelargonium sidoides. It is an antiviral, antibacterial and increases the activity of white blood cells which target and destroy infection. It also improves lung function by blocking adhesin molecules which bacteria stick to in the lungs, preventing infection and helping to clear it faster.
It has been found in trials to improve acute bronchitis, cough, headache and nasal discharge. Acute rhinosinusitis and the common cold also respond dramatically – most effective if you start it at the first sign of either (sore throat, runny nose, sneezing etc). Continue to take this for 3-5 days until the virus has gone. It has also been shown to be beneficial in:
• Acute sinusitis (bacterial)
Selenium forms an integral part of at least 25 human proteins, including the selenoenzymes – powerful antioxidants which protect tissues from metabolic damage. Selenium enhances the action of a liver enzyme (P450) involved in detoxifying cancer-causing chemicals, is involved in the repair of damaged genes and the interconversion and deactivation of thyroid hormones. It’s needed for normal cell growth and immunity, protects against a range of degenerative diseases such as hardening and furring up of the arteries, emphysema, liver cirrhosis, cataracts, arthritis, stroke and heart attack.
Within the EU, the authorised nutrition and health claims for selenium includes contributing to:
• the maintenance of normal hair
• the maintenance of normal nails
• the normal function of the immune system
• normal thyroid function
• protection of cells from oxidative stress.
• normal sperm formation
Dietary sources of selenium: The best food source of selenium is Brazil nuts. Selenium is also found in fish, poultry, meats (especially game), mushrooms, onions, garlic, broccoli and cabbage. However South African soil is extremely deficient in selenium so it’s unlikely you will get enough from food. Taking a daily supplement is one way to protect yourself.
L-Lysine is known to help build collagen in the skin and banish acne, cold sores and fights hair loss. It is also extremely beneficial for the heart and prevents atherosclerosis
