Traditional muesli is a cold, oatmeal dish that consists of rolled or quick oats and additional ingredients such as nuts, seeds and fresh or dried fruits. It is usually eaten immediately or soaked overnight with milk, yogurt or cream and sweetened to the consumer’s liking with honey or maple syrup.
Bircher Muesli was developed in the 1900s by a Swiss physician named Maximilian Bircher-Benner, for his patients in hospital to help provide them with a more nutrient dense dish. The original Bircher-Benner recipe included the addition of grated apple, nuts such as walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts, the juice of fresh lemon and was often sweetened with cream and honey or condensed milk.
Enjoy this delicious Swiss inspired muesli immediately, served with the milk of your choice or soak overnight with grated apple and a squeeze of half a lemon served with the addition of yogurt and fresh fruit in the morning.
